I first went to Morocco about five years ago (wow, that makes me feel old). I’ll be honest, it wasn’t my favorite trip. But, with a friend of mine getting married in Marrakech later this year, I am really excited to revisit a place that many people fall in love with. I’ve had so many people give me tons of reasons why Marrakech should be on your bucket list, and I’m excited to go back and give the bustling city another chance to wow me.
Before we dive into things, I think it’s important to note that not everyone you meet will fall in love with the same places. It’s also important to be aware of the fact that there are so many factors that go into a trip. So, while my trip five years ago was a bit daunting, I’m really looking forward to going back and seeing and experiencing Morocco from a different point of view.
So, now, I’m going to tell you why Marrakech should be on your bucket list…
1. The food
I love Moroccan food. A good tagine is everything to me. And there is no shortage of them in Marrakech. There are so many beautiful restaurants in hidden gardens to discover with menus that will make your mouth water. I think I’m most looking forward to stuffing my face with tomato salads, tagine, and couscous, and washing it all down with a fresh pot of mint tea.
2. The architecture
The winding alleys of Marrakech were something that I remember very well from my first visit. I loved wandering through the maze of streets while my senses were overloaded. The buildings are beautiful — from the small stalls of the souks to the grandeur of some of the raids. Last time, I loved looking up at the Koutoubia Mosque, which is surrounded by the most fragrant orange blossom grove you’ve ever smelled. I also strolled over to La Mamounia, a five star hotel that has so many beautiful mosaics lining it’s walls that I was simply blown away.
This next time, Jardin Majorelle, the gardens designed by Yves St. Laurent, are on the very top of my bucket list. The colors of this place are truly captivating.
3. The Souks
If there was ever a reason to travel to Morocco, it would be to visit the souks in every single city. And for me, the souk in Marrakech is unbelievably beautiful. Colorful spices line the walkways, stacks of shoes overflow off of shelves, vibrant ceramics can be found in every other stall, and sparkling lanterns make you feel like you’re in a fairytale. And let’s not forget about the textiles. I will be bringing a rug back with me when we go next time! I will not be packing a carry on — that’s for sure!
4. The Experiences
I think that the reason I had a hard time with Morocco the first time I went was because at that point in my life, it was the most foreign place I had ever traveled to. And if you haven’t traveled much, you will be overwhelmed. But now, as an experienced traveler, I think that my adventure in Marrakech will be much different this time around. I’m looking forward to feeling overwhelmed. I’m looking forward to having a sensory overload. It’s what really makes travel exciting!
5. BONUS: If you have time, head out to the desert!
There are tons of tours that leave from the Medina in Marrakech. I went on a two night, three day desert tour, and it was honestly the most amazing experience ever. Think overnight stays in the mountains, sunset camel rides in the Sahara Desert, camping under the stars, and more!
