I can’t believe I’m about to move again! In a few weeks I will be moving to my third flat in London. Moving in London can be a massive pain, but I’m here to help you out! Over the next several weeks I’m going to be walking you through the entire process of moving in London. I’m going to go through all of the steps. From where and how to look for a flat to rent in London, to my experience searching for one, how to choose an area to live in, what to do once you’ve found a flat you like, and how to deal with end of tenancy.
But, for today, I will be talking all about where and how to look for a flat! There are a million different websites and apps to use when looking for a place to live in London. And deciding which ones to use really depends on what sort of flat or house you want to live in.
Where to Look For a Flat to Rent in London
1. SpareRoom
If you’re interested in renting a room, then SpareRoom is your best bet. According to their site, every three minutes someone finds a flatmate on SpareRoom. The people who are posting adverts have been vetted by the site, so you know it’s safe. Plus, they have some cool events that go on to help you meet flatmates in real life! I found my first flat through SpareRoom. All you do is search for what you want, in the neighborhood you want it in, and add some filters like the number of people you’d want to live with, pets, etc. From there you’ll send a message to the person who made the listing and sort out a viewing directly with them!
2. Movebubble
If you are planning to live with people you already know or by yourself, there are so many sites and apps to choose from.
My personal favorite is Movebubble. Movebubble is a nice app that allows you to create a search with all of your parameters for your new housing situation. Then, each day, they’ll send you alerts to your phone telling you about new properties being listed. And if you like what you see, you can either send a message via the app, or draft an email in the app to the agency.
3. Purple Bricks, Rightmove, and Zoopla
There are other sites/apps like Purple Bricks, Rightmove, and Zoopla where you can look at listings and get in touch with agencies about setting up a viewing. Usually once you submit a request, you’ll get a phone call almost immediately from an agent.
They’ll ask you what you’re looking for (number of bedrooms, location, budget, etc.) and then add you to their database. This is great to do because you’ll now be the first to know about new listings.
Listings are added daily to websites like this!
4. OpenRent
If you’d prefer to go directly through the landlord, you should try using OpenRent. I haven’t used it, but I have some friends who have found their flats that way. It’s great if you want to have a relationship with your landlord instead of dealing with going through an agency.
