I spent the past two weekends wandering around the Venice Carnival. As part of my job I’m often sent on day trips around Italy and one of our most popular day trips is to Venice.
Carnival was a lot of fun. I’ve now been to Venice four times and it was really cool to be able to see it during Carnival. It is way way more crowded so be mindful of that. If you’re looking to stay there for the weekend, book your hotel ahead of time and if you’re looking to head there for the day from somewhere else in Italy, make sure you book your train tickets early as they often sell out.
You can still do typical activities like take a gondola ride, you might just have to wait awhile. It generally costs 90 Euro for up to six people to ride a Gondola during the day. Its more expensive at night.
There are a ton of great costumes that you’ll see while walking around Venice. All of the main activities take place in or around Piazza San Marco, so if you want to be in the action, hang out there.
No matter what you do, Venice is BEAUTIFUL. I personally don’t think its necessary to spend more than a day or two in Venice. If you do spend two days, think about taking a tour to Burano, Murano and Torcello (more to come next week).
Would love to hear about your trips to Venice if you’ve been there!
