3 Reasons You Should Visit The Cameron Highlands

cameron highlands

After arriving in Malaysia, we hopped on a bus to the Cameron Highlands. The bus ride takes about four hours from Kuala Lumpur and costs about 12 USD roundtrip. The bus is fairly decent and would probably be considered a VIP bus in Southeast Asia terms.

I knew that I had to visit the Cameron Highlands while visiting Malaysia. I have a friend who grew up in the country and had told me that it wasn’t to be missed. But, I will preface this post with this: you only need one full day to explore the area. The town itself is actually very tiny and there isn’t a ton to do. If you’re looking for excitement, you won’t find it in the Cameron Highlands.

But, what you will find are beautiful landscapes and very kind people. Stay in a guesthouse, eat the local food and sign up for a tour (the best way to see the sights–I suggest a half day tour, we saw everything we wanted to see and were still exhausted afterwards).

Here are three reasons why you should visit the Cameron Highlands:

The Tea Plantations

Perhaps my favorite part of my entire visit to this area of Malaysia was visiting the Boh Tea Plantation. We were actually allowed to frolic through the tea fields (which if you know me, is one of my favorite things to do) and take photos amongst the rows and rows of tea plants. It’s truly wild to see how far the tea plantations stretch. Literally as far as the eye can see. I’ve never seen anything like it.

The Lavender Ice Cream

This may sound ridiculous, but my friend and I just decided to head to a Lavender Farm for a few hours (because we spent way too much time in the Cameron Highlands and needed to kill time). During our visit we had several local Malaysian people take photos with us and we ate the best ice cream that I’ve ever had. In my entire life. (And I lived in Italy for a year…)

The Mossy Forest

Now my photos don’t do this place justice. Just imagine that you’re in Avatar or Lord of The Rings. Because this forest is straight out of a fantasy. Make sure you tell your guide that you want to actually walk through the forest and not on the wooden planks that only show you a tiny bit of the crazy moss covered landscape.
