Cruising can have a bad reputation. You often see stories about them on the news, or you see people throwing shade at them because of their demographic. But, most of the things you hear about cruises, aren’t even true. Cruising is an excellent option for people who want to travel to see different places, without having to pack and unpack their bag over and over again. It’s great for groups of people of all ages ranging from families, to young couples, to older people. There are so many things about cruises that aren’t true, that it’s totally necessary to share them with you, so you can give cruising a chance!
Recently, I went on a cruise with Princess Cruises. Before the big day, I reached out to my Instagram followers and asked them to tell me what their assumptions about cruises were. I got a ton of responses and filmed a great Youtube video addressing them. Today, I’m going to share six things about cruises that aren’t true with you!
Six Things About Cruises That Aren’t True
1. Cruises Are Just For Old People
I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that my cruise had a ton of old people on it. I think that that’s because we left from Southampton, making it a lot easier for older people traveling from the UK. Leaving from Southampton means that you don’t have to get on an airplane to get to the cruise port.
But, among the old people there were also lots of families, groups of friends, and young people. I think that it really depends on the destination that you cruise to, but cruising is for everyone! And CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association recently did a survey and found out that the demographic is changing. In the last two years, the highest growth of bookings is between the ages of 30 and 39.
2. Cruises Aren’t Safe
There are a lot of stories on the news about people falling overboard and no one ever notices. I can’t speak for other cruise lines, but Princess Cruises takes safety seriously. Upon arrival to the ship, we were all called to our muster stations to go over safety rules. During this time, the cruise directors spoke to guests about the specific safety protocols the ship follows. Aside from that, there are also safety videos that play on the TVs in every single room. Plus, there are signs everywhere reminding you to stay safe and not lean over the balconies. Really though, the balcony banisters are quite high, so you’d have to lean really far in order to fall overboard.
3. You Don’t Get to Really See The Places You’re Stopping In
Even though you’re only in port for a few hours, there are ample opportunities to really explore the destinations as you visit them. The great thing about cruising is that you have the option to explore as little or as much as you’d like to. If you want to make the most out of your day, think about signing up for an excursion or doing research ahead of time to plan out your day. If you’re not too fussed about it, then grab your camera and your walking shoes and explore the port city!
The best way to think about cruising is that it’s a taster. If you love a place you visited, you could always go back and visit again!
My Princess Cruise took me to La Coruna and Bilbao in Spain, Bordeaux, France, and Guernsey!
4. There Aren’t Enough Food Options On Board
Cruise ships are basically floating cities. If you look at it that way, then you’ll realize there are a ton of dining options on board. On our ship, which was the Sapphire Princess, there were two pizza places, a burger spot by the pool, an ice cream parlor, a healthy food area for adults by the spa, a buffet area, a steakhouse, a specialty Italian restaurant, and traditional dining options. Traditional dining basically just means that you choose a time that you’d like to eat dinner and each night the menu changes. And if that’s not enough for you there is a 24 hour cafe and 24 hour room service!
5. Cruise Ships are Uncomfortable
I slept like a baby on my cruise. Princess Cruises has amazingly comfortable mattresses in the rooms. The linen is soft and there is even a two inch topper on each bed! Depending on what room you choose, you may have a seating area, or a balcony to relax on. Throughout the ship there are several places to unwind ranging from the spa to bars and restaurants to pool loungers. You will not be uncomfortable on a cruise ship!
6. The Only Thing to Do on a Cruise Ship is Party
Yes, there are a ton of bars on board a cruise. But, there are also so many other things going on, so you don’t have to drink if you don’t want to. Each night there is a different show in the main theater. These could be guest performers or West-End caliber productions. There are comedians on board, karaoke each night, movies under the stars, and bingo. The options are endless, so it’s hard not to find something to do!
