I’ve now been to Secret Cinema twice and I can honestly say that it’s my favorite event in London. It’s a crazy production and it’s something you have to see for yourself! Part movie night, part immersive theater, and part most amazing thing you’ve ever seen in your life, it really can’t be missed!
But, with an expensive price tag, and pretty much no information about the event aside from the movie you’ll be seeing, is it worth it?
YES, A HUNDRED TIMES YES!
Secret Cinema
First of all, I think the reason I love it so much is that it’s all a secret. And people keep the secret. No phones are allowed inside and if they are brought inside, they’ll be put into a pouch so you can’t use it to take photos or videos. If you’re caught with your phone out, they can ask you to leave.
Another thing I love about it is the lead up to the event. A few months out you’ll start to receive emails teasing you about it. A few weeks before it starts, you’ll be able to sign up to the database.The whole database is built around whatever movie you’re seeing. It will be incredibly thought out and detailed. You’ll sign up, and be assigned a character that you’ll have to dress up as when you attend the event.
A few weeks out, you’ll receive an email telling you which tube station to go to. That’s all the information you get. You don’t know where it is until you get off the tube and follow secret cinema staff to the location. It’s incredible.
On Set
The production on these things is insane. I just went to the Casino Royale one and I assume that they must have spent hundreds of thousands on pounds on it. I felt like I was on a movie set the entire time. And the actors are amazing because you don’t really know who is an actor and who is a guest attending.
For the first few hours you get to explore the world that secret cinema has created. And then the main event will be the movie and the actors will continue to surprise you as they act out scenes in front of the screen.
So, do yourself a favor, book into Secret Cinema! It’s so worth it. And pro tip, if you go during the week, the tickets tend to be a little bit cheaper!
