George Town, Penang was my favorite part of Malaysia. The streets are lined with British colonial houses. The food is to die for. And the street art is some of the coolest I’ve ever seen.
A short plane ride or bus ride from KL will take you to Penang, a small Malaysian island. The island is the cultural and historical area of Malaysia and old George Town is UNESCO protected site.
Here’s Why I Fell In Love With George Town, Penang:
The Gorgeous Street Art
Head down to Armenian Street to check out the amazing street art. You can grab a map at a tourism center, the airport, or your hotel. You can easily spend an entire day wandering around the old quarter of George Town stumbling upon super elaborate pieces of street art. Several of the pieces are painted onto the building walls and then actual items (like swings, motorcycles, and bicycles) are apart of the work of art.
The Delicious Food
I loved the food in Penang. I also loved the little cafes everywhere.
You can eat Chinese food, Indian food, and more. There are several different Hawker stands you can visit, grab some street food, or you can you wander into the hole in the wall style restaurants. My favorite dishes: duck rice and butter chicken (throw in some garlic naan and I’m happy).
The Colorful Buildings Everywhere
Perhaps the best part of the city was seeing all of the beautiful, colorful buildings everywhere. I could spend hours walking up and down the streets seeing all of the pretty, brightly colored historical buildings. I’m in love (fitting right, #travelcolorfully haha).

Thanks! It was actually named after King George as it used to be an English Trading post!
