Whoever said you needed to spend a ton of money when traveling was sorely mistaken. In fact, some of the best things I’ve done on my many adventures around the world were free. Which is why one of the first things that I do when I’m traveling somewhere new is look up some fun free activities. And I found a ton of free things to do in Pamplona, Spain. They ranged from wandering through local markets, to exploring parks, to museum hopping. In fact, I really only spent money on food while visiting Pamplona.
The great things about all of the free things to do in Pamplona, is that most of them are outside. And even though I visited in the wintertime and it was a bit rainy outdoors, I was still able to wander through the streets, check out the many green spaces, and just enjoy being outside in the charming city. So if you’re interested in visiting Pamplona but you were worried about staying on budget, don’t worry. There are plenty of free things to do in Pamplona.
Four Free Things To Do In Pamplona
1. Wander Around The Old City
I could have spent an entire day wandering through the tiny cobblestone streets of Pamplona. So, it makes sense that it’s topping my list of free things to do in Pamplona. The old city is full of beautiful architecture, colorful buildings, and a ton of history. In fact, take some time to walk the Encierro, the pathway that the bulls run during the San Fermin Festival. Find your way up Calle Santo Domingo, Ayuntamiento, Mercaderes, and Estafeta. The route will bring you through the narrow streets that the bulls travel through on their way to the Plaza de Toros de Pamplona.
2. Go For A Run Through The Citadel
If you enjoy exercising while you travel and find that running is a great way to explore a city, then Pamplona is the perfect destination for you. The Citadel is a fortress that was built in the 16th century and you can visit it free of charge. While there you’ll encounter several locals walking their dogs, jogging, and just enjoying the old walls. It’s a very peaceful green space located a few blocks from the old city.
3. Walk Some of the Camino de Santiago
Each year people from all over the world find their way to Spain to take part in the Camino de Santiago. The entire walk should take about 30 to 35 days, but if you only have a couple of days, you can walk some of it in Pamplona. The pilgrimage is 500 miles long, and Pamplona is an excellent place to experience just a few of those miles.
4. Grab A Seat On A Bench at Jardines de la Taconera
This was one of my favorite parks in Pamplona. And if it had been just a little bit nicer I think it would have been packed. I ended up finding a bench during a few hours of sunshine and watched the peacocks, turkeys, pheasants, and deer roam around near the water. It was so relaxing!
Not Totally Free Things To Do In Pamplona
If the weather isn’t the best, it might be hard to explore the old town, the Camino de Santiago, Jardines de la Taconera, and the Citadel. Luckily, you can then go and spend your day eating around the city. The food doesn’t cost that much, and you’ll almost always enjoy a delicious meal! And if you’re looking for other ways to spend your 48 hours in Pamplona, check out my post on that!
