Checking In: Equity Point, Marrakech

I recently visited Morocco with one of my friends. We decided that we wanted to visit Marrakech and my boss suggested that we stay at the hostel, Equity Point.

Equity Point has locations in Barcelona, Madrid, Marrakech, London, Girona, Lisbon, Prague and New York. The chain boasts stylish, high quality accommodations in popular destinations.

The Marrakech branch is located in the heart of the Medina, steps away from many souks and a short walk to the Koubtoubia Mosque. It is in the traditional Riad style and is gorgeous. For only paying 15 euro a night, I was expecting something else, and I was pleasantly surprised to walk into the hostel and have my breath taken away. The common areas are stunning. There is a pool, a rooftop deck, a seating area where you can see the entire city, and much more.

We arrived on Thursday night and checked into our room, a dorm style, four person, all female room. During check in we were given keys to lockers and rented a towel for about 10 dirham or 1 euro. We planned on staying for two nights before heading out on the desert tour that the hostel lets you book through them.

We ended up enjoying dinner at the hostel most nights, as the menu was inexpensive and the quality of the food was fantastic. During our meal we dined on fresh hummus with toast, tomato and onion salad with mint, tagine as well as brochettes. And we also sipped on mint tea throughout our stay.

The hostel also offered a complimentary breakfast, taking after the traditional Berber meal — bread with jam, pancakes, and pastries.

The people who worked at Equity Point were all very helpful and very kind to us. The rooms were cleaned each day, which isn’t common for most hostels. My only complaint would be that the wifi only worked in the common areas of the hostel. As a blogger, its always nice to be able to use wifi in your own room, but having to travel to the common areas was bearable as the decor was beautiful.

We booked our desert tour, which I will tell you more about in an upcoming post, and we left on Saturday morning, returning to Equity Point on Monday night.

The Hotel

We spent our final evening there, enjoying more food and mint tea before heading to bed. And then when we woke up on Tuesday morning, we checked out. Thankfully we are able to keep our belongings in the luggage room until we had to head to the airport.

We really wanted to book spa appointments, but were told that they only do them for evenings. This was never mentioned while I was emailing back and forth with someone who worked there. It would have been nice to have received a heads up about that during check in, as we really wanted to get massages and traditional Hammam soap scrubs.

Even so, I would definitely visit another Equity Point in the future. Overall it was a fantastic experience and one of the nicer places I’ve stayed throughout my travels. I felt safe, it was clean and the quality of the food and hostel went above and beyond my expectations…
