The Truth About Travel IV

GoPro

You might drop your GoPro into a Quarry…

I’m having a wonderful day in Chiang Mai at a quarry called The Grand Canyon, about 20 minutes from downtown. I decided to cliff jump into the water with my GoPro (because COME ON, that would be an amazing video!). Mind you, I’ve done this before…

I jump. I hit the water, the GoPro is still in my hand…. I get sucked down and my camera springs out of my hand… I go to grab it and instead I push it farther away from me… Holy Crap.

The old Taylor would have lost her mind. She would have gone crazy, probably screaming and crying and ruining the rest of the trip not only for herself, but for the people who travelled with her… Instead (much to her own shock), she simply comes up from trying to look in the zero visibility water of the 80ft deep quarry and screams (F**K). And thats that.

I realized something (because I had just put all my videos on my computer), it’s just a material object, it can be replaced. It was the most expensive cliff jump experience ever, but I had fun and I’m still glad I did it. I’m sure my reaction would have been much different had I not just backed up my videos. I was really lucky that I had done that. I know people who never put their stuff on their computers… BACK UP!! I would have lost my mind.

I was definitely in shock right after it happened, I got upset the next day, cried to my Mom a bit, but hey, thats normal. When it all comes down to it, I was so proud of myself. A year ago I literally would have left the trip right then and there and gone back to my home in Phrae. Instead, I was able to still have a really amazing weekend. My friends who have known me for awhile who are with me here told me they were impressed by my reaction and that meant something… I travel and put myself in these crazy situations hoping to grow as a person and I clearly have. It’s crazy that I had to drop my GoPro, pole and remote into the water to realize that, but it’s okay…

My friends let me use their GoPros until my new one came in so that I could still have footage for my November video. I already got a new one (Christmas came early… Thanks Dad :)).

Things happen. You lose things. Or you drop things. You break things. They can be replaced.

Plus, as my Dad said, “Okay. I guess some Thai fish is filming now..”
