Chiang Mai: Doi Suthep

I arrived in Chiang Mai last week after hours and hours of traveling. And I won’t lie, the amount of time spent on an airplane was aggressive (27 hours traveling, about 24 in the air!), but it was totally worth it.

I definitely need to get back there to explore a bit more since we were busy doing a lot of orientation activities… We did make a trip up to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, a gorgeous temple overlooking the city of Chiang Mai.

You can find a tuk-tuk or songthaew driver to take you up there. Once you arrive, you have the option to walk up the 300 steps of the Naga Serpent Staircase or take the tram for about 30 baht or $1 USD.

If you pause to take photos with the children dressed up on the stairs, you will have to pay them. You can give them some spare change, nothing too crazy. They will hound you though, so just be weary of this! If you take a photo with them and don’t pay them, they will probably follow you.

When you head into the temple, make sure to remove your shoes and have your shoulders and knees covered. Prepare to be amazed by the gorgeous gold spires and decorated temple. It was one of the most stunning places that I’ve seen. There is gold everywhere and the temple is extremely colorful.

Make sure to check out the view of Chiang Mai! There is a viewpoint that overlooks the whole city. You’ll be amazed by the size of Chiang Mai.
