Kuang Si Falls
The cascading falls leading to azure pools of water was breathtaking. I had never seen anything like it. I was amazed. Kuang Si Falls is located in Laos, about 29km from Luang Prabang. The beautiful waterfall is the biggest in the area, with a 50-meter drop leading to three-tiers of perfection.
You can get to the waterfall by hiring a tuk-tuk for half a day. Or, you can try renting a motorbike, or take a bus. The cheapest option would be to hire a tuk-tuk if you can get a group together. Renting a motorbike in Laos can be very expensive. They don’t like to rent them to foreigners because of the liability. We paid 250,000 kip (30 USD) for a tuk-tuk. Because there were five of us we each paid 50,000 kip, which is about 6 USD. The tuk-tuk picked us up from our guesthouse, drove us to the falls, waited for about four hours and then drove us back. Well worth the cost!

When you first arrive at Kuang Si Falls, you’ll pay an entry fee of 20,000 kip (2.50 USD). The fee goes towards maintaining the park. You’ll walk up a path and come across several Asian Black Bears that have been rescued from poachers. The bear sanctuary is there to help take care of bears that have been injured or have been born with health complications. They are working hard to save them and keep them safe.
Afterward, you’ll keep walking and come across breathtaking falls… but, keep walking because you’ll soon stumble upon several natural swimming pools, with cascading waterfalls coming into them. The water is very cold but so worth it. If you dare, jump from a high up tree branch into the water.
Keep exploring either before or after your swim (I suggest after because after a little bit of a hike you’ll need to cool down). As you continue walking upstream, the falls will get bigger and more beautiful. You’ll end up standing beneath a beautiful, massive waterfall. Cross the bridge and prepare for a bit of a hike (don’t wear flip-flops! I did and I ended up going barefoot).
See if you can find the secret “swimming pool” during your hike. You won’t be disappointed at all (it’s beautiful!).
I really did fall in love with these falls… It was by far the most beautiful place I saw during my first portion of travels around SE Asia. So, don’t miss out!
