Having lived in Florida for several years before moving to the UK, I thought that I had seen most of South Florida. I was totally wrong. I had only really ventured North of Palm Beach County a few times, and I had completely skipped over Martin County. You may be wondering where Martin County even is. It’s part of the Treasure Coast of Florida and it’s sandwiched between Palm Beach County and St. Lucie County. And there are a ton of things to do in Martin County, Florida. Because a lot of the cities are either located on the intracoastal or ocean, most of them involve the water!
8 Things To Do In Martin County, Florida
1. Pick A Home Base
If you’re going to be exploring the county for a few days, you have to pick the perfect home base. Check into the Hutchinson Shores Beach Resort and Spa for the perfect getaway. They’ve just been nominated for the Conde Nast Traveler 2019 Reader’s Choice Awards and you can absolutely see why. The hotel is located in Jensen Beach and offers 178 oceanfront accommodations. There are private balconies, a beautiful spa, two outdoor pools, delicious restaurants, and beach loungers and umbrellas for guests.
2. Sail Away During Sunset
Hop aboard a historic wooden schooner and sail away into the sunset! Enjoy an amazing evening sail on board the Schooner Lily, a large sailboat with a hull made entirely out of wood. The boat was once used as a working cargo boat, but now owners Captain Fred and Jamie Newhart offer charters and tours from Shepard Park in Stuart. They offer three daily Sail Boat Charters on St. Lucie River. Choose from a morning, afternoon, or evening sail. Bring along snacks and drinks and see if you can spot some dolphins swimming around the boat!
3. Paddle Board In The Intracoastal
With so many things to do in Martin County, Florida, it can be hard to narrow the list down. But, going paddle boarding is a no brainer! There are so many places you can rent boards or grab a tour. I suggest using The Ohana Bus. They over rentals, lessons, and eco tours in the area. Plus, you get to ride in style on a bus that is decked out to the nines. Enjoy a paddle on the clear, blue Intracoastal. Just make sure to check the wind before you head out as you don’t want to have to paddle back against the current!
4. Grab A Bite At The Twisted Tuna
If you’re looking for a local spot to grab a bite to eat in Martin County, look no further. The Twisted Tuna in Port Salerno is an amazing seafood restaurant serving up some delicious food. From fish dip to sushi, to sandwiches and tacos, the food is fresh and tasty. Plus, the great thing about this spot is that in the evenings and on the weekends they have some awesome live bands playing both inside and outside!
5. Ride The Waves
Experience all that the Florida’s East Coast has to offer from the water. Take a Riding The Waves tour through the mangroves to learn all about the local ecosystem as you cruise along in your own private motorized catamaran. Zoom through the waterways while spotting dolphins, pelicans, herons, and more! They offer daily tours, ranging from eco tours to sunset tours, coastal cruising, and exploring the St. Lucie River.
6. Explore Downtown Stuart
One of the things to do in Martin County, Florida is check out Downtown Stuart. The Historic Downtown area is home to shops, restaurants, ice cream parlors, and more. They hold Riverwalks, Green Markets, and networking events. There are arts fairs, craft festivals, and more! And during the holidays, whether it’s Fourth of July, Halloween, St, Patrick’s Day, or Christmas, there is always something going on! While small, Stuart is buzzing!
7. Enjoy a Yoga Session on The Beach
There’s nothing like practicing yoga on the beach. With the waves crashing on the beach and the wind blowing around you, it’s hard not to feel relaxed in that environment. Luckily there are plenty of times you can participate in a yoga class on the beach. Usually if it’s being offered by the county, classes can be taken on a donation basis. But, if you decide to stay at Hutchinson Shores, you’ll have ample opportunities for some zen as well.
8. Breakfast Sandwiches By The Beach
Florida living basically requires you to enjoy one meal a day by the beach. So why not start yours off with a bite to eat at the Sand Dune Cafe? They serve up delicious breakfast sandwiches, smoothies, omelettes, and more. The mouthwatering food is super satisfying. I recommend ordering the sunrise breakfast sandwich which consists of eggs, bacon or sausage, and cheese on a warm, flaky croissant. Plus, you get to enjoy whatever you choose with a view of the beach and surrounded by palm trees.
