I don’t know about you, but I find moving to be the worst. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the world, but I’ve now had to go through three moves in London. And moving day in London can be really easy (where all you have is two suitcases) to okay (where you can fit all of your possessions in an Uber XL) to a pain in the ass (when you have enough belongings to fill an entire room up with boxes and furniture). So, today I wanted to share five tips with you about how to make your moving day in London go seamlessly!
5 Tips to Get Through Your Moving Day in London
1. If you have a lot of stuff, hire a mover.
Because my boyfriend and I were moving into an unfurnished place, I decided that we should buy some furniture in advance. I also acquired a lot of stuff from friends who were moving out. So, there was no possible way I would be able to move my things myself. But, that’s fine because once again, Fantastic Services saved the day! They set up a removal service for me. It’s really simple to do… You can get a quote by showing them everything you need to have moved. The best way to do this is by sending photos or a video of your belongings so they know how big of a truck they need. They used a Luton Van with me and it was amazing! (For ten pounds off your first booking with them, click here). They moved all of my stuff in about two hours (I wasn’t moving very far) and they really saved me because there was no way I was going to carry all of it up and down the stairs!
2. Plan ahead.
If you know you’re going to be moving in a few weeks, start packing early. As long as you have an area in your home where you can start putting boxes and suitcases, the earlier you begin to pack, the better. It makes it so you’re not as stressed in the days leading up to your moving day in London. As I was moving in the middle of summer, I packed up all of my winter items first and went from there!
3. Get rid of things you don’t use anymore.
Packing is the perfect time to Marie Kondo your life. Seriously. You have to go through all of your things anyways, so you might as well make the most out of your time and get rid of a few things. Donate them to a charity shop or find a collection box nearby. You can look for one on your council’s website. They have listings of all of the recycling centers, including clothing drops.
4. Label your boxes.
This probably sounds obvious, but I forgot to do it. It resulted in me telling the movers to just put everything in a pile and then I had to sort through everything to figure out where it all went. Also, pack your boxes by room. I just shoved everything in because I was trying to use as few boxes as possible and it was a mess.
5. Unpack the necessities first.
When we got to our new place, we unpacked what we knew we needed to first. For us that meant building our bed from Ikea and then letting our eve sleep mattress out of the box so it could expand. You’ll know what you’re going to need first, so make sure those boxes are easily accessible and unpack those first!
