4 Things To Do When Visiting Granada, Nicaragua

visiting granada, nicaragua

I’m back on the road and I literally couldn’t be happier. I touched down in Nicaragua very late Thursday night/Friday morning and spent the night in Managua. The next morning I found my way to the bus station, hopped on my very first Chicken Bus and drove an hour and a half to Granada. When visiting Granada, Nicaragua, you’ll come across stunningly beautiful and super colorful architecture. The old time Spanish colonial town is dripping with charm and you will really enjoy getting lost among the streets.

4 Things To Do When Visiting Granada, Nicaragua

1. Get Lost In The City

You could easily see Granada in a day, but I chose to stay for a few days. And I’m so glad I did because it gave me ample opportunity to wander the streets taking photos, experiencing the local culture, and people watching. I walked the touristy strip as well as visited more off the beaten path streets. And I would have to say that all of the places I stumbled upon were super magical. Visiting Granada will take your breathe away. It’s as simple as that.

2. Take A Million Photos Of The Colorful Buildings

Granada is a Spanish colonial town and the architecture is so stunning. My favorite part though was the insane amount of colors that line the streets. I found so many buildings painted in bright and bold colors just begging to be photographed. It’s definitely a super photogenic spot.

3. Climb Up The Bell Tower Of Iglesia La Merced

Oh my goodness. That view: insane. Climb up the bell tower (it’s steep, but only takes about 10 minutes), and you’ll be met with the most beautiful view you’ve ever seen. You can get a 360 degree view of the whole city from up there. I heard it’s awesome at sunset, but I was always taking a siesta then or indulging in happy hour.

4. Take A Day Trip To Lake Apoyo

I decided to take a day trip to Laguna Apoyo while I was in town. It’s a short twenty minute ride away and it was so much fun hanging out on the tiny beach, sipping on Tonas (the local beer), and taking quick dips in the lake when I got too hot. It was fun to get to know the other people who had been staying in my hostel (and some girls I literally met while wandering around on the street). Most tour companies and hostels offer RT transportation, free tea and coffee, and water for around $14 USD.
