Chiang Rai is one of nine provinces that makes up Northern Thailand. It has also been one of my favorites. So, you find yourself in Chiang Rai for a few days and you’re wondering, what exactly can I do here? Here are five awesome ideas.
5 Things to do in Chiang Rai
1. Visit The White Temple….I know, that was probably already on your list. Wat Rong Khun is probably the reason you’ve heard of Chiang Rai in the first place. It is a beautiful fairytale-like temple that is about a 20 minute motorbike ride out of the city. (Read my full post on, The White Temple).
2. Wander the grounds of the Black House. It is absolutely STUNNING. I apologize for the overuse of caps lock, but I can’t stress it enough that you should make time to visit this museum. Baan Dam is an amazing grouping of contemporary structures. If you’re going to The White Temple, you should see the Black House as they are complete polar opposites. (Read more about Black House.)
3. Roadtrip to Phu Chi Fa. And, if you don’t have enough time to spend a night there, you can hire a van to take you in one day! It seriously shouldn’t be missed as the sunrise was probably the prettiest I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. The clouds create this “seamist” around the peaks of the other mountains and its truly breathtaking. (Read about it here)
4. Take a bike ride in Singha Park. Rent one for two hours for about 200 baht and enjoy the gorgeous tea plantation, petting zoo, and rolling hills of the park. It was so beautiful and I obviously had the best time hanging out with some giraffes! (More info)
5. Tour a tea plantation. I unfortunately didn’t have enough time to do this, but many people recommended it to me. Choui Fong Tea is one of the highest quality teas you can find in Thailand so its definitely worth the trip if you love tea. Take a tour, do a tasting and learn more about the delicious tea of Thailand.
