Even though Britain may not be the biggest country in the world, there are a ton of really cute places to explore. One of those is Windsor. Located about an hour train ride from Central London, Windsor is a quaint town on the Thames. Most known for being the home of Windsor Castle, the Queen’s favorite residence, it’s a bustling small town. Many people only travel to Windsor to visit the castle, but there is so much more to do there. Instead of taking a day trip, why not spend 24 hours in Windsor instead?

Getting There From London

Did you know that Windsor is part of the Great West Way? The Great West Way is 125 miles stretching from London to Bristol. There are so many things to do along the route, but this time, only a visit to Windsor was on the books. If you’re traveling there from London, hop on a train. You can either grab a train from Paddington to Windsor and Eton Central or from Waterloo to Windsor and Eton Riverside. The latter is a much faster and more direct route.

There are a number of hotels located in the city of Windsor, but if you’re interested in spending some time outside of the city center, the De Vere Beaumont Estate Hotel in Old Windsor is a great option.

The 18th Century Mansion was originally built for Lord Weymouth. It was eventually turned into a public school. After a multi-million-pound refurbishment, it was turned into a hotel that is home to business retreats, family reunions, and weddings. The hotel has over 400 rooms and sits on 44 cares of grounds, complete with natural ponds. It’s only 3 miles from Windsor, making it easy to get back and forth.

Where To Eat in Windsor

You won’t find ordinary pub fare at The Royal Windsor Pub. The pub, which offers incredible views of the Round Tower and Windsor Castle cooks up delicious dishes, house-infused cocktails, craft beers, and more.

The outdoor terrace is the perfect place to grab a drink and enjoy the view. The dining room inside is elegant and is a great place to grab a bite with friends or family.

Tip: Order the Parma Ham Salad, BBQ Pulled Pork Bun, and The Royal Windsor Rhubarb and Blackberry Gin!

What To Do in Windsor

There are so many things that you can do while visiting Windsor. Spend a few hours wandering through the lanes that surround the castle. Pop into local shops and explore the town.

But, the main event in Windsor is visiting Windsor Castle!

No visit to Windsor is complete without a visit to Windsor Castle. You’ll probably spend most of your 24 hours in Windsor exploring the castle and its grounds.

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the entire world. Its main purpose is to serve as a residence for The Queen. But, it’s also a very large museum.

Founded in the 11th century by William the Conquerer, it has served as a home to 39 monarchs. Queen Elizabeth spends most of her weekends at the Castle.

When visiting the castle, you’re able to see the State Apartments through two different routes, the Ceremonial Route, which features rooms that are still used today. And the Historic Route which features rooms that have been preserved. You can visit St, George’s Chapel and the Moat Room. You can also see the Changing of the Guard throughout the day.

But, if you’re visiting during the months of August and September, you’ll want to do the Conquer the Tower Tour. During this tour you’ll climb 200 steps to the top fo the Round Tower. From here, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Windsor, the grounds, the Thames Valley, and even the London Skyline. Your guide will tell you all about the history of the castle and the tower during your visit. The tour lasts 45 minutes and costs 31.50 pounds with a combined ticket to the castle.

French Brothers Boat Tours

After you’ve had your fill of castles, it’s time to see Windsor from the river. Hop on a boat at the Windsor Promenade with French Brothers. Enjoy a number of tours and learn about the areas that line the Riverside. The 40 minute round trip tour will give you great insight to the towns of Windsor and Eton. It will also give you a lovely view of the castle on your way back. The tour costs 9.50 pounds.
