This is definitely not the kind of content I would usually bring to you. It’s not a blog post I would usually right. But, given the state of the world and the COVID-19 outbreak, I wanted to share some ideas on things to do during self-isolation at home. I’m not here to talk about the coronavirus, but I am here to give you some suggestions on ways to entertain yourself since you’re probably finding yourself stuck at home for the foreseeable future. Luckily we live in a time where entertaining yourself shouldn’t be too hard. But, please remember to STAY INSIDE!
12 Things To Do During Self-Isolation
1. Get in a workout
There are so many ways to get a free workout on at home. From Youtube channels dedicated to fitness, to ClassPass Live, to Peleton Live, and even your local studios streaming online classes, you can easily find someway to workout at home. You don’t even need to have equipment to do some of these classes. I’ve been doing Yoga with Adriene in front of my TV and have been doing bodyweight strength training instead of my usual weights at the gym.
2. Read!
I love to read and if you’re looking for things to do during self-isolation, it’s a really good one. I have set a challenge to myself to read 100 books before the end of 2020 and I feel like now is the perfect time to put a dent in that number. In fact, I went to the library and took out about 20 books before it closed, to ensure I have enough reading material to get me through self-isolation. If you want some suggestions on books to read, check out my January and February book round ups on Youtube. And if you can’t make it to a library and are unable to order books online, your public library should have a way to access their e-library!
3. Get creative in the kitchen.
By now, it’s a little bit hard to find specific things in the grocery store. So, why not get creative? Have you ever watched the TV show chopped? Well why not create your own baskets of mystery ingredients with the things you have in your fridge and see what kind of masterpiece you can cook up?
4. Puzzles
Puzzles are a great way to pass the time. They can be pretty time-consuming depending on how many pieces there are and how difficult it is — half of the puzzle I have is the same shade of blue… But they’re a great way to get away from screens and put your mind to the test.
5. Stream
Thank god for streaming services… I feel like I could probably spend the next several weeks just sitting on the couch watching movies and tv series from various streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime… And if you’re in the UK, Disney Plus is now available!
6. Board games and card games
Why not get a little bit competitive if you’re self-isolating with someone else? I definitely plan on beating my boyfriend at Bananagrams and UNO because a little friendly competition never hurt anyone, right? And if you’re alone, there are tons of games you can play by yourself with a deck of cards.
7. Video games
My boyfriend loves playing his XBOX… Call of Duty is his game. I personally love playing the Sims… It just takes me back to my youth. You can also get sucked into a black hole playing the Sims, which during times like this, are totally necessary.
8. Learn a new skill or finally get to that thing you’ve been meaning to do
It’s the best time to learn a new skill because you probably have a lot more free time than you usually do. So after you finish working from home, why not learn something that you haven’t been able to because you’ve been too busy? You could take an online course on websites like Skillshare, learn something on Youtube, learn how to knit, teach yourself to draw, whatever it is!
Oh, and if there is something you’ve been meaning to do like write a book, create a course, build a business, literally anything — do it now!
9. Get some fresh air if you can.
Fresh air is really important so I suggest going for a walk or a run if you’re able to. If not, make sure to open windows in your home to air it out and to just get a nice breeze flowing!
10. Clean!
I don’t know about you but I can’t sit around in a dirty flat. So, cleaning has been a nice little way for me to get myself moving. From organizing (I literally Marie Kondo’d my boyfriends drawers) to scrubbing the kitchen, cleaning out the fridge, and vacuuming under the bed, there is a lot you can do to keep your home sparkling.
11. Stay connected!
Have a virtual hang out with friends. It’s one of the best things to do during self-isolation. Group facetime. Enjoy a glass of wine with your partner or roommate. Human connection is vital!!
12. Finally, relax!
It is okay to take some time to relax. Why not draw a bath, light some candles, and maybe turn on a meditation app so you can take some much needed me time (especially if you’re self-isolating with someone else). It’s okay to take a step back and close the door so you can be alone!
