Let’s Go On A Road Trip In Croatia

road trip in croatia

Sometimes the best experiences are the unplanned ones. And that’s exactly how my road trip in Croatia was. I’m usually a planner. In fact, not having some sort of plan gives me insane anxiety. But when my friend called me and asked me if I wanted to join in on a road trip in Croatia, I couldn’t say no. Plus, it was only a two hour bus ride from Slovenia.

The road trip started in Zagreb. I stopped there for lunch and then we hit the road.

A Road Trip In Croatia

Day 1

We drove down to Rijeka and because we didn’t have anything booked, we decided to move on as we weren’t loving the vibes. From there we headed to the island of Krk. This is something we wouldn’t have been able to do without a car or already having accommodations booked. We were really taking a chance as it was high season (August in Croatia is really crowded). Luckily, over a glass of wine we were able to find a place to stay, as someone had cancelled their booking last minute. We ended up staying directly in the center of town – it was perfect. We stayed in Krk, but headed to Vrbnik for dinner that evening. It was the cutest little seaside town and we really lucked out with the views!

Day 2

We spent our second day exploring the island of Krk. We literally just drove around the coast and stopped wherever we saw a beautiful beach. This is why having a car was the best idea ever. It gave us the opportunity to stop wherever we wanted. One of my favorite places was Stara Baska. It’s a beach that you have to hike down to. It wasn’t super crowded and it had the perfect little vibe to it. Plus, the Adriatic has some of the most beautiful water I have ever seen and it was sparkling here!

After finishing up here, we headed to Zadar to spend the night. We ended up staying a little bit outside of the city but we drove in for dinner and walked around for a bit before calling it a night!

Day 3

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the Garden in Zadar before hitting the road again. Throughout the day we stopped at several beaches along the way. We ended the day at Brela, which was way busier than any of the other places we had visited. Still, the water was beautiful there and the beach was big enough that there was still space to lay down.

After the beach there, we drove to Makarska but ultimately decided to head back to Split to stay there for the night and enjoy a night out!

If you’ve never been to Split, it’s Mereen in Game of Thrones. It’s also a huge backpacker city which makes it a great place to party.

Day 4

road trip in croatia

On our way from Zadar to Split, we had passed this area on the side of the road that looked like the most beautiful place in the world. So we decided to spend our final day searching for it. And we found it and it was literally perfect.

IF you ever go to Croatia, you must rent a car. There is no other way to see the country. Taking a road trip in Croatia is the best way to experience all of the amazing coastlines and tiny little towns.
