,One of my favorite things about visiting a new place is learning all the interesting and quirky things about it. So, when I ventured to Brighton from London for the day, I knew I had to find out all of the fun facts about Brighton. And there are a lot of them. But, for this blog post I’m going to focus on the ones that I found to be the most interesting! I hope that you can impress someone with a bit of Brighton Trivia that you learn from this post!

1. The Royal Pavilion is still standing because of Hitler.

During WWII, Hitler ordered the Nazi’s not to bomb the Royal Pavilion because he loved the architecture. He wanted to use it as a summer house after the war was over. Luckily that didn’t happen…

The Royal Pavilion was built in three different stages in 1787. It became the summer residence for the Prince of Wales in 1811. It’s inspired by Indian architecture and was meant to be his seaside escape so he could enjoy a holiday.

2. The Brighton Dome has jump started a lot of famous people’s careers.

In 1972 Pink Floyd debuted his Dark Side of The Moon Album in the building. It of course later went on to do tremendously well. And in 1974, ABBA won EUROVISION which was hosted in the Brighton Dome with their performance of the popular song “Waterloo.”

3. The Lanes are a labyrinth of streets that have been around for a very long time.

Once part of the original settlement of Brighthelmstone, the lanes were built up during the late 1700s, and were completed in 1792. They became popular as people began to travel to Brighton to take advantage of the health benefits of seawater. They’re now filled with antique and jewelry shops.

4. Brighton is home to the only Grade 1 pier in the entire country.

The West Pier, which burnt down in 2003 because of arson. In 2002 it had already begun collapsing.  Consequently fire fighters couldn’t get close enough to it to salvage the pier. And what’s left standing is a shell of the main structure of the pier. It’s still standing because it is a fixture in Brighton history.

5. Brightly colored painted rooftops can be seen from the i360.

Hop on the i360 for 26 miles of 360-views of Brighton and beyond. It’s about 15 pounds for a ticket and 24 pounds for a ticket and a drink. Plus, the pod fits 175 people inside and offers spectacular views. And the coolest thing to see from the top are the rooftops that have been painted throughout Brighton and can only be seen from the i360.

6. You can take a walk into the upside down.

Head to the Upside Down house on the Brighton Beach Boardwalk. It’s the third upside down house in the UK and was built by a 25 year old. Most importantly, make sure to bring your camera for some totally quirky photo opportunities. Entry is 5 pounds.

7. Miles of rocky beaches line Brighton’s coast.

Brighton’s beaches are stone beaches and they stretch for miles. It’s been estimated that there are over 614,000,000 pebbles (this is one of my favorite fun facts about Brighton)!

8. London by the Sea is Brighton’s Nickname.

It only takes about an hour to get to Brighton from Central London so many people have nicknamed it London By the Sea. I don’t think it’s anything like London, but the proximity to the big city has definitely earned it its title.

9. Brighton is home to the largest Pride parade in the UK.

Each August hundreds of thousands of people flock to Brighton to experience the Pride parade. It’s the largest celebration in the country and attracts people from all over the world. It starts at Hove Gardens and continues throughout the day.

10. A Colorful Beach Hut will cost you.

Colorful beach huts line the beach between Hove and Brighton. While they look pretty and offer a great photo opp, unless you have a bit of money stashed away, you won’t be getting your hands on one anytime. In other words, the average beach hut goes for about 18,000 pounds.

11. Brighton is home to the world’s oldest aquarium.

Built in 1869, Sealife is the world’s oldest aquarium. It was constructed for 133,000 pounds which is equivalent to 3.5 million pounds today.

12. The Brighton Pier uses a lot of electricity.

The Brighton Pier is beautiful at anytime of the day. But at night it really comes to life when over 60,000 light bulbs light up to cast a gorgeous glow along the entire pier.

13. Finding a pint is easy.

There are more pubs than days of the year in Brighton. Therefore, it’s easy to find a pint no matter what part of the city you may find yourself in! Cheers!
