I’ve always wanted to explore more of England. And thanks to Southeastern Railway I was able to do just that! Using my Southeastern Weekender Ticket, I traveled back to Kent. This time, I decided to spend the day and night exploring Canterbury. I traveled on one of their high speed trains and arrived in Canterbury in about an hour, eager to explore the cute English town.

If you’re going away for the night or for the weekend, your best option for travel is the Southeastern Weekender Ticket. All you have to do is travel outwards on Fridays after 9:30 am or anytime on Saturdays. For your return trip, you can use your ticket on any train on Saturdays or Sundays. You can even stop off an anywhere on your way home for no extra cost.

Canterbury is a small town, but it’s really cute. It was the first place I’ve been to in England where I thought, this is what a small English town should feel like. While it was a little bit touristy, there were still some fun things to do and explore.

Where To Stay

Before you start exploring for the day, check into your hotel. The Abode Canterbury is a comfortable hotel that is centrally located on the high street, making it the perfect place to rest your head after a day of exploring!

Where To Eat and Drink

If you love pulled pork then you need to go to Pork and Co. I suggest ordering the Mac and Cheese topped with pulled pork or the Meaty Melt, a delicious sandwich filled with both pulled pork and mac and cheese. Sounds like heaven doesn’t it?

Another favorite of mine was the Shakespeare. It’s an adorable wine bar that serves up wine flights in a cozy environment. The drinks are reasonably priced and it’s the perfect location for a nightcap.

Things To Do

Start your day off by taking a stroll through the streets! Canterbury is absolutely adorable and you’ll love wandering through the lanes and admiring the colorful doors and old buildings. Afterward, pop into the Abbey and the Cathedral. You can explore the grounds of both after paying an entry fee in each place.

You’re staying overnight, you have a unique opportunity to join in on a ghost tour! Canterbury is a very old city (it’s a UNESCO Heritage site because of its history) which means that it has several ghosts running around its streets. It was home to witch hunts, medieval conflicts, and more. Several of the buildings are haunted and the streets are too!

After you’re done wandering around, it’s time to get on the river! Join one of the punting tours for some information about the town as well as a relaxing boat ride down the river. I found this activity to be so peaceful and it was great to see Canterbury from the water.

Why Your Southeastern Weekender Ticket Will Make Your Trip Even Better!

canterbury

Using the Southeastern Weekender Ticket was so simple. I loved that it was possible to hop on a train after rush hour on Friday and find myself in a new place in an hour. And then you can decide if you want to head back on Saturday or Sunday. Plus, it’s also great to have the option to hop off on any station on the way home for no extra cost. It means that you get the most out of your ticket, which is awesome if you don’t have a lot of time to explore towns outside of London. Head to their site to buy your own and start exploring!
